Teaching Science with Technology

Video and Chapter Reviews In the Classroom Adapting libraries to the digital areas is not something I support. Although, I do see the positive aspects such as the there may be more variety for students, or they don’t need to carry around books to and from school. It might be because I grew up in the time where we had no other choice but to pick out books from the library, sign them out, and bring them home that I feel turning Digital takes away from the meaning and personal aspect of a hardcopy. I understand the importance of technology, however I do not wish for it to take over all subject matters resources. Video Review pg. 128 I have mixed feelings regarding technology becoming such huge component in education. Technology is inevidable and has ultimately become a part of our everyday lives, especially for the younger generations. As useful as I believe it is, a part of me feels it is not as authentic as being hands on, reading a hardcopy book, or painting with their hands

Break The Ice

So tonight was the night we got to meet the kids ! Its funny, no matter how many times I do this I always get those nervous jitters at first. Overall tonight went really well in my opinion. We got to know the kids initially through a pre-test where they were asked a variety of questions and expectations. I found the test to be way to long for the students, and rather challenging for younger students to answer on their own. I was able to work with a 4th grader who I have worked with before. This time, his brother was in the class with him. It was interesting to see him struggle with even personal questions in fear he would be wrong, whereas, his older brother was flying through the questions. Anyway, following the pretest we went into a different room where there were 4 groups. Each group provided a different ice breaker activity. For my group, Alyssa came up with the awesome idea of getting a ball and writing questions on them. When the students caught the ball they would answer th

Climate what?

CLIMATE CHANGE ! This is not a joke, not something people should think can’t happen, IT IS HAPPENING .  Climate change is now faster and more prominent than ever before. Growing up I can remember hearing about it once and awhile, not ever questioning it or really thinking about more than in that moment. Today I see people standing on the side of busy roadways protesting change be done to help our Earth. Human health, agriculture, energy, ecosystems, and so much more are being impacted and effected by climate change at this very moment. How do we not see an issue with this ? maybe because the time there really is nothing left we may not be around? our children's children will be suffering but we won’t be there so it won’t matter, right? NO. We need to make a change now to prevent any further impacts on society. This young girl left me speechless. Her words, emotions, and the way she didn’t hold back was almost shocking to see. Her voice at such a young age is not only po

The Kingdoms

The 5 Kingdoms 1.  Given your personal learning style, how do you remember information that relates to classification, such as the Kingdoms? If I am being completely honest, science never caught my attention throughout school. I can remember struggling with definitions and retaining information. I had to find ways that worked for me in order to learn and gather new information. I came to find that I was a visual learning, I make deeper connections when I am able to be hands on rather than reading through a textbook. When remembering definitions especially I would make up acronyms which really helped me with definitions, theories, or specific terms/people.   2.     What science process skills are used to learn the information necessary to classify living things into the Kingdoms?                                        1. Observe - this is essential in learning the other science process skills. 2. Classifying-Create order to help comprehend the number of objects

Assessments FOR Learning

Assessment  of  learning or Assessment  for  learning Which phrase are you most comfortable using and why? By the title you can assume I feel more “comfortable” with the phrase assessment for learning. However, I feel both phrases are equally important for teachers to incorporate throughout instruction. Assessment for learning allows teachers to assess students learning and understanding of important concepts being taught through different assessments, test, exit ticket, etc. Assessment for learning allows the teacher to assess the areas of strength and/or areas that need improvement. Whereas assessment of learning provides the teacher information of students learning and whether they are grasping the concepts or not. Watch video below for a brief comparison of Assessment of learning vs. assessment for  learning
