Teaching Science with Technology

Video and Chapter Reviews

In the Classroom

Adapting libraries to the digital areas is not something I support. Although, I do see the positive aspects such as the there may be more variety for students, or they don’t need to carry around books to and from school. It might be because I grew up in the time where we had no other choice but to pick out books from the library, sign them out, and bring them home that I feel turning Digital takes away from the meaning and personal aspect of a hardcopy. I understand the importance of technology, however I do not wish for it to take over all subject matters resources.

Video Review pg. 128

I have mixed feelings regarding technology becoming such huge component in education. Technology is inevidable and has ultimately become a part of our everyday lives, especially for the younger generations. As useful as I believe it is, a part of me feels it is not as authentic as being hands on, reading a hardcopy book, or painting with their hands rather than on a screen.  As stated in the video, “it is important that we teach the next generation of children to be wise users and consumers of technology” however, I do not think it should replace learning centers such as art and literacy centers that support children’s growth over the 5 developmental areas. I simply feel that technology limits or reduces that opportunity for students to grow.

Chapter 8

Using Technology to Enhance Science Learning
As I mentioned, technology has vastly taken over our everyday lives within the last 5 to 10 years. Children today are learning how to use technology as early as young infants and toddlers. With that being said, it is important for educators to provide technology in the classroom to show students the benefits and learning opportunities is does provide. Technology is a great resource to gather information, research the unknown, and provide solutions to many problems / questions. I do not believe it should be a the main focus of a lesson. Similarly to the video, the students first went and did their own research throughout the school before using technology. “New technology should be seen as a tool for enhancing classroom practice”

Chapter 9

 Adapting the Science Curriculum
It is important as an educator to be mindful of all the diverse students coming to learn in your classroom. Teachers need to make accommodations for those students who may need further explanations or translations. I believe a solution to better education for all students is communications with parents. Staying connected throughout the day, explaining what is being done, providing pictures and other images for them to gain a better insight on the classroom throughout the day and how subjects like science are being taught.
