Break The Ice

So tonight was the night we got to meet the kids ! Its funny, no matter how many times I do this I always get those nervous jitters at first. Overall tonight went really well in my opinion. We got to know the kids initially through a pre-test where they were asked a variety of questions and expectations. I found the test to be way to long for the students, and rather challenging for younger students to answer on their own. I was able to work with a 4th grader who I have worked with before. This time, his brother was in the class with him. It was interesting to see him struggle with even personal questions in fear he would be wrong, whereas, his older brother was flying through the questions. Anyway, following the pretest we went into a different room where there were 4 groups. Each group provided a different ice breaker activity. For my group, Alyssa came up with the awesome idea of getting a ball and writing questions on them. When the students caught the ball they would answer the question that their right thumb landed on. It was a great icebreaker activity for us to get to know each other a bit better. Other groups did activities with senses, two truths one lie, and a build your own maze activity. When we came to the end of our session Courtney asked if the students if they enjoyed tonights activities, in which they all raised their hands. Some shared what they enjoyed, and explained what they did throughout each group.
Next time we meet group 1 will be presenting their lesson ! I am excited yet nervous to see how it all turns out, but looking forward to working and getting to know the students better !

As I think back on my science experiences, the first memory that comes to mind is a volcano I made in 1st grade that was left on my desk for my parents to watch it erupt during open house. Chapter 7: Integrating Science and Engineering  Teaching science involves aligning your lessons with next-generation science standards. Science/engineering and language arts can all be incorporated during lessons. You can seek connections with language arts to science lessons. Science/engineering can be incorporated into mathematics. Based on the standards of both math and language arts you can use both in your science lesson and make the lesson even more intriguing.   Science/engineering can also be incorporated into social studies lesson, art and music and health and physical education. CLIMATE CHANGE ! This is not a joke, not something people should think can’t happen, IT IS HAPPENING .  Climate change is now faster and more prominent than ever before. Growing up I can remember hearing about it once and awhile, not ever questioning it or really thinking about more than in that moment. Today I see people standing on the side of busy roadways protesting change be done to help our Earth. Human health, agriculture, energy, ecosystems, and so much more are being impacted and effected by climate change at this very moment.
